Ajdovščina is geographically located in the center of the Vipava valley and is the administrative center of the region. Its position along an ancient road towards Italy and the nearby permanent and strong source of water at Hubelj made it a military post (named Castra, or longer: Castrum ad fluvium frigidum) already in the Roman time (since ~270 AD). A Roman tower and parts of the Roman town walls are still visible. After the demolition of the Roman town in the 5th century, the town was mentioned for the first time in the Middle Ages in 1507. Blacksmith workshops emerged along Hubelj stream in the 16th century, followed by several other types of industry. Also important in the history might have been its location at the border between the region of Carniola (Kranjska) and Gorizia/Goriška. The first Slovenian government was established in Ajdovščina on May 5, 1945. Despite its population of only 7000, the town is an important industrial and educational center with an art gallery, a railway station and an airstrip.
